Conquering Cotopaxi: A Thrilling Hike to 5,000m in Ecuador's Wet Season

Cotopaxi, one of the world's highest active volcanoes, is a must-see for any South American adventurer. We embarked on a challenging hike to 5,000m during the wet season, facing unpredictable weather and testing our limits. Our journey began at the legendary Secret Garden Cotopaxi hostel, a unique haven nestled in the Ecuadorian Andes.

The Secret Garden: A Hobbit's Paradise

Our "Hobbit home" at the Secret Garden was a cozy escape from the frequent afternoon rains. Built into the hillside, surrounded by lush greenery, it provided a warm and inviting atmosphere. The thick duvets and heater were much appreciated in the chilly mountain air. While the rain obscured our initial views of Cotopaxi, the hostel's unique charm and tranquil setting made for a memorable stay.

The Secret Garden offers a variety of accommodations, from hobbit homes to hostel rooms, catering to different preferences. The communal areas, including the dining room and lounge, foster a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to connect with fellow travelers.

Preparing for the Ascent: Travel Insurance is Key

At 3,400m, altitude sickness is a real concern. We relied on SafetyWing travel insurance for peace of mind. Their coverage extends to altitudes below 4,500m and offers an "adventure sports" add-on for mountaineering up to 6,000m, covering Cotopaxi and other South American peaks. They also provide coverage for travel delays, lost luggage, and other travel mishaps.

The Cotopaxi Challenge: Hiking Through Clouds and Wind

Our hike began with a bumpy hour-long drive up to the Cotopaxi National Park. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse as we arrived at the car park. Strong winds, rain, and thick clouds obscured the volcano. Despite the challenging conditions, we set off on our trek to base camp, hoping for a break in the weather.

The altitude made every step a challenge. The final 200m ascent to base camp felt almost vertical. Short breaks, snacks, and sheer determination pushed us forward. Reaching base camp at 4,800m was a triumph, but the glacier was still higher.

Reaching the Glacier: A Triumph at 5,000m

After a short rest, we continued our ascent towards the glacier. The altitude intensified the physical exertion, causing dizziness and lightheadedness. The final push was grueling, but the sight of the glacier, the highest tropical glacier in the world, made it all worthwhile.

Reaching 5,000m was a personal victory. The breathtaking views of the glacier and the surrounding landscape were a reward for our efforts. The descent, while easier on the lungs, presented its own challenges with slippery snow and rain.

Exploring the Secret Garden: Llamas, Jacuzzis, and More

Back at the hostel, we finally had the opportunity to explore its hidden gems. We fed friendly llamas, relaxed in the jacuzzi filled with fresh river water, and discovered the hostel's gym, gardens, and cozy lounging areas. The Secret Garden Cotopaxi is more than just a hostel; it's an experience.

A Final Glimpse of Cotopaxi

The following morning, we were greeted by a clear sky and a magnificent view of Cotopaxi in all its glory. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure.

Conclusion

Hiking Cotopaxi during the wet season presented unique challenges, but the rewards were immeasurable. The stunning landscapes, the thrill of reaching 5,000m, and the warm hospitality of the Secret Garden Cotopaxi created an unforgettable experience. If you're seeking adventure in Ecuador, Cotopaxi should be at the top of your list.
