E-Bike Adventures in Flood-Hit Yangshuo
Our journey began 20 minutes outside of Yangshuo city, amidst the picturesque countryside of rural China. The landscape was a stark contrast to the bustling cities we'd previously visited. However, recent flood alerts in the province presented an immediate challenge: overflowing rivers and submerged roads.
Our e-bike adventure took an unexpected turn as we encountered a large puddle blocking our path. With the water levels significantly higher than usual, we weren't sure about the e-bike's waterproof capabilities. Taking a deep breath, we plunged through, thankfully emerging on the other side without incident. We later learned about the organized flood control system in the region, where floodgates are strategically opened to manage the water flow.
Discovering Hidden Gems and Budget-Friendly Stays
Amidst the challenges, the beauty of the rice fields and the friendly locals reminded us of the charm of rural life. We stopped for refreshing lemon tea at a quaint roadside stand, enjoying the incredible riverside views. The tranquil setting felt worlds away from the urban landscapes we'd experienced elsewhere in China.
Our accommodation was a true highlight: a stunning room with panoramic glass windows overlooking the forest-covered mountains, all for just £7.50 a night. The property also boasted a pool, making it an incredible value. The peaceful location, combined with friendly English-speaking staff, made it a perfect base for exploring the area.
A Solo Sunset Hike and Unexpected Challenges
While Emilia wasn't feeling well, I embarked on a solo sunset hike up one of the iconic karst mountains. The slippery path, a result of the recent flooding, added an extra layer of challenge. Using my Insta360 X4 camera, I documented the climb, enjoying the freedom of hands-free filming.
Reaching the summit rewarded me with breathtaking panoramic views of Yangshuo, the Li River, and the surrounding landscape. The descent, however, proved even more treacherous in the fading light. Without a head torch, I carefully navigated the slippery path, eventually making it back safely, albeit covered in mud and sweat.
Exploring Xingping Ancient Town and the Li River
The next day, we set off for Xingping, an ancient town on the Li River. A sudden downpour forced us to take shelter in a construction site, leaving us soaked but undeterred. Xingping's ancient architecture, although renovated, retained its charm. The town is famous for its depiction on the 20 RMB note, and we were eager to see the iconic view for ourselves.
We finally reached the viewpoint and compared the scenery to the image on the banknote. The flooded Li River was a powerful sight, a testament to the recent heavy rains. The intense heat made exploring challenging, so we paced ourselves, waiting for cooler temperatures in the evening.
