Guatemala, a land of vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, boasts a chain of towering volcanoes, two of the most famous being Acatenango and Fuego. This article details our challenging yet rewarding experience hiking these majestic peaks, one dormant and the other actively erupting. Preparing for the Climb: Gear, Guides, and Getting Started

Our journey began in Antigua, where we booked a tour with CA Travelers. The $630 per person price tag included transportation, meals, guides, and a private room – a welcome luxury after a strenuous hike. Renting a proper hiking backpack is highly recommended, as the trail demands appropriate gear. We rented ours for 50 Quetzales. The tour company also provides essential items like jackets and offers boot rentals for those who need them. The first part of the hike is notably challenging, with a steep incline and minimal shade. Starting early is key, and pacing yourself is crucial, especially for those unaccustomed to high altitudes.

We opted for a porter to carry our heavier bag (12kg) for 200 Quetzales, a decision we didn't regret. Having four guides for our group of 20 was invaluable. They provided encouragement, ensured our safety, and offered insights into the local flora and fauna.

Ascending Acatenango: A Test of Endurance

The initial ascent is demanding, with a constant uphill climb. The altitude gain from 2,200m to 3,600m is noticeable, and the thinning air can be challenging. Thankfully, our guides set a manageable pace, allowing for breaks and acclimatization. The changing landscape, from lush greenery to volcanic rock, kept the journey visually interesting.

The provided meals were surprisingly substantial and delicious, offering much-needed fuel for the climb. Our camel bags proved essential for staying hydrated throughout the trek.

Base Camp and the Fuego Spectacle

Reaching base camp was a rewarding moment. The simple cabins offered warmth and a place to rest. The views of Fuego erupting were simply spectacular. The rumbling sounds and fiery displays were a constant reminder of the raw power of nature.

We opted for the additional Fuego hike (200 Quetzales extra), which took us closer to the active volcano. This section was even more challenging, with difficult terrain and the added challenge of darkness and cold. While the views were partially obscured by clouds, the experience of being so close to an erupting volcano was unforgettable.

Descending and Reflecting: Lessons Learned

The descent, especially from Fuego, was surprisingly difficult. The loose terrain and darkness made for a slow and arduous journey. Altitude sickness also affected some members of our group, highlighting the importance of proper acclimatization and preparation.

Despite the challenges, the Acatenango and Fuego hike was an incredible experience. Witnessing the volcanic eruptions, experiencing the dramatic landscapes, and pushing our physical limits made for a truly unforgettable adventure. After our volcano adventure, we continued our journey to Lake Atitlán, a stunningly beautiful lake surrounded by volcanoes. We booked a shuttle with CA Travelers for 150 Quetzales per person, making the transition seamless. The views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes, including Acatenango and Fuego in the distance, were simply breathtaking. Lake Atitlán offered a peaceful and picturesque setting to recover from our challenging hike.
